Pontevedra is the starting point of the Variante Espiritual. More specifically, the church of La Peregrina, patron saint of the city and the Portuguese Way.
READ MOREThe Variante Espiritual begins after crossing the Burgo bridge, where we must take the detour signposted to the left. Just over 20 kilometers separate the pilgrim from Pontevedra until the end of the stage: the Armenteira monastery, where we can sleep. In Renaissance and Baroque style (16th-17th centuries), the Cistercian monastery preserves its impressive Romanesque church built in 1167.
The first stage of the Variante Espiritual goes through other exceptional places such as Poio, where we can appreciate its Benedictine monastery, declared a Site of Cultural Interest. In the vicinity of the temple, the pilgrim will be able to contemplate one of the largest granaries in Galicia: the granary of San Xoán de Poio, built at the end of the 18th century with 33.46 meters long and 3,368 meters wide.
And to continue admiring the rural architecture of Galicia, nothing better than stopping to rest in Combarro, a paradise for granaries and stone crosses. In this beautiful fishing village, the pilgrim will have the possibility of seeing more than 60 granaries, 30 of them lined up on the banks of the Pontevedra estuary.
