Ruesta-Sangüesa

You leave Ruesta through a footpath over the river Regal and past the Romanesque chapel of Santiago, up towards mount Fenerol. The beginning of the section is demanding as it is quite steep, but in compensation, it offers some spectacular views of the mountain range of Leyre, with the peak Arangoiti and the Yesa dam.

The first half of this section continues down the mountain, and into the village of Undués de Lerda, the last village in Aragón, where we recommend a break and a visit to its manor houses and the church of San Martín.
After Undués, there is a descent and the Camino leaves Aragón and enters Navarre towards Llano del Real. You continue to find the historic town of Sangüesa. With over 5000 inhabitants, there are some architectural jewels in its streets: the façade of Santa María la Real, a national monument and the only Romanesque church in town.
Walking through the historic centre you can see some other remarkable buildings such as the church of Santiago, the palace of Príncipe de Viana, and the convent of San Francisco de Asís, all of them but a few examples of the wonderful centuries-old heritage of this town. The town is clearly marked by the Camino, and it is famous for its hospitality; besides, you can also find all sorts of services here, as well as restaurants and leisure activities.

“At Tiermas, in the province of Saragossa and on the Aragonés Way, you will find the ruins of an old bath house where you can still find hot water when the waters are below the level of the Yesa dam. This means that from February onwards, everybody can enjoy a bath in the sulphur waters of this spring”.
