The Camino de Santiago from Burgos to León is one of the stretches that preserves the purest essence of the jacobean routes. Its vast plains with almost no services or population and its small villages make this itinerary one of the most loved and hated of the Camino Francés.

Avoided by many pilgrims who wish to flee from the vast castilian plains, with no shade in summer or protection in winter, the Camino between Burgos and León allows, however, enjoy the solitude, silence and communion with oneself.

In addition, despite walking through wastelands with few populations, this stretch of the Camino is endowed with enough services. This way, the pilgrims who wish to cover the stretch from Burgos to León can count on the rucksack transfer service from Correos, among some others.

And, of course, they can enjoy a vast patrimonial, cultural and artistic wealth. And beyond the poetic landscape of the castilian plains, the pilgrim will also enjoy the Canal de Castilla, get to know the Iglesia de San Martín de Frómista, a jewel of the romanesque, and enjoy beautiful villages such as Castrojeriz or Carrión de los Condes.

Six stages by the castilian plateau

The Camino Francés between Burgos and León covers 175 km, its majority being castilian plateau: big plains and crop fields will be the main character of every stage along the silence and the solitude, inseparable peers of the Camino.

The starting point of this route is, with no doubt, one of the biggest jewels of the Camino Francés: Burgos. Before starting, don't hesitate to visit the Cathedral and get to see its gothic needles, walk aroung the Espolón promenade or visiting the Santa María la Real de las Huelgas Monestary. Here, you have some plans to enjoy Burgos.

From here, every pilgrim has to divide the route according to their preferences and needs, considering the available days, physical condition and chosen time of the year. We propose a division of the route between Burgos and León in six stages:

Stage 1. Burgos – Hontanas. 31 kilometers. This first stage introduces the pilgrim into the castilian fields and the pilgrimage through the plateau. Tardajos and Hornillos del Camino are some of the few populations in this stage.

Stage 2. Hontanas – Boadilla del Camino. 28 kilometers. A stage with a major cultural and landscape wealth, among which we would like to highlight the San Antón Convent, Castorjeriz and its castle up in the hill, the San Nicolás de Puente Fitero Hospital and its traditional host and the little population of Ítero de la Vega.

Stage 3. Boadilla del Camino – Carrión de los Condes. 25 kilometers. The Canal de Castilla will be your peer in the  Camino to Frómista, where the amazing Iglesia de San Martín de Tours, jewel of the Romanesque, is one of the highlights.

The tour alon the patirmony of Palencia is completed with the templar church of Santa María la Blanca in Villalcázar de Sirga. And in Carrión de los Condes, where you can find the churches of Santa María del Camino and Santiago, with its emblematic Pantocrator.

Stage 4. Carrión de los Condes – Terradillos de los Templarios. 27 kilometers. The castilian fields is once again the main caracter of a stage where he pilrim will be able to walk through a roman road: the Vía Aquitania.

Stage 5. Terradillos de los Templarios – El Burgo Ranero. 30 kilometers. The cereal fields accompany the pilgirm to Leonese lands, enjoying in Sahagún the churches of San Lorenzo and San Tirso.

Stage 6. El Burgo Ranero – León. 37 kilometers.  Last and longest stage to León, that allows stopping in populations such as Reliegos, Mansilla de las Mulas or Puente Villarente.

León and its Pulcha Leonina wait for the pilgrim a the end of this Camino.

Getting to know the basilica of San Isidoro, visiting the old Hospital of San Marcos or going out for some pinchos in the old town are some of the plans which the pilgrim can pay homage to oneself with.

The stages between Burgos and León are easy and flat. However, they present other kind of difficulties for he pilgrim: mainly the sun and heat in the summer, the cold in winter, he lenght of some stages and the absence of populations and services in several kilometers.

That is why, when walking this stretch, it is important to:

  • Plan the stages. Adapt the stages to your needs. Choose the populations where you will sleep and adjust correctly the kilometers you will be walking each day.,
  • Protect oneself from the sun and get hydrated constantly. If you will be walking the Camino in spring or summer, the temperatures are usually high and the shade is scarce.

That is why it is important to protect oneself from the sun (breathable clothing, hat and sun cream), to hydrate constantly or to avoid the hottest hours of the day.

  • Revising the available services. The services in this stretch are limited because some of the populations this Camino goes through are very small.

Some pilgrims choose to walk this stage of the Camino Francés by bicycle and, that way, shorten the days of Camino. If that is your option, you can send your own bicycle with our Paq Bicicleta and, from León, you can send it back home.
