The cultural heritage, the tradition and the mind-blowing landscapes of the Camino de Santiago are the perfect scenery for a movie. If you add to this the pilgrim experience, you get the perfect mix between emotion and beauty. This is why many films have taken place on the different Camino de Santiago Routes.
Today we sum up some of the most popular movies, so you can enjoy the experience of the Camino de Santiago from the comfort of your home, and help you remember the times you walked it or let you see what’s out there for when you finally decide to embark in this journey.
The Way (2010)
The first movie we think about when talking about the Camino is “The Way” a 2010 movie starring Martin Sheen, directed, written and produced by his real-life son Emilio Estevez.
In this story, after his son dies while walking the Camino de Santiago, Tom Avery (Martin Sheen) decides to travel abroad and not only recover his son’s body, but he decides to pick up the pilgrimage where he left it and scatter his ashes along the Camino Francés. During his Camino he meets pilgrims from very different backgrounds and that decided to walk the Jacobean route for various reasons.
Strangers on the Earth – A Journey on the Camino de Santiago (2016)
This documentary film is the perfect mixture between the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage and music. This movie takes us on the pilgrimage with Dan, an American cellist that walked the Camino with his instrument, playing for pilgrims along the Camino. Along his journey we get to know the story of other pilgrims and their experience on the Camino.

Within the Way Without (Tres en el Camino) – (2004)
This two and a half hours long movie tells the story of three pilgrims from very different backgrounds. They come from Brazil, Holland and Japan and travel the Camino Francés in different seasons: summer, spring and winter and for very different reasons.
They all reflect on their journey from the Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela once they’re back home. Through this film we not only get to see the same places on the Camino in different seasons, but we will also be able to experience how this journey affects these pilgrims in different ways and changes them.
Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago (2013)
This documentary takes us along The Way with several pilgrims from very different age groups as they walk the Camino de Santiago. We will be able to accompany them as they travel 500 miles on foot, face their struggles and evolve as they get closer to Santiago de Compostela.
As they define it on their webpage, “Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago”: “Rather than merely entertaining with mental diversion, the film will engage its audience in an active rumination on their own lives”.
Footprints
This documentary tells the story of a Roman Catholic priest from Phoenix, Arizona. He gathers a group of men from very different backgrounds and in different points of their life to walk the Camino de Santiago.
The ten men, plus the priest, walk from France to Santiago de Compostela following the Camino del Norte (Northern Way). Each one of them will add to the experience what they are best at. During their pilgrimage they face blistered feet, bad weather and hard stages but they take away a very valuable life lesson.
